Google announces a number of new features designed for Google Maps, including a new in-house navigation tool and adapted driving directions. One of the big announcements is that Google is delivering its own targeted information to taxpayers at airports, transit stations, and supermarkets. Live View directions let you pick up your phone, point your camera at the world around you, and see arrows and icons pointing you to where you need to go, and previously, they only worked outside.
However, these indoor AR guides are not going to distribute widely at the moment. They are only available at some major malls in Chicago, Long Island, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle at present. Google will introduce live directions to live viewing at selected travel destinations, airports, and supermarkets in Tokyo and Zurich in the coming months, however, and more cities are “on the way,” the company said.

Google also plans to redesign the interface to select your route for directions on Android and iOS. This new interface will release worldwide in the coming months.
In addition to the visual interface of the directions, Google is adding a new type of driving route optimized for low fuel consumption. If the eco-ready route has the same E T A as the fastest route to the destination, Google Maps will default to the fuel-efficient route, or you can change this in settings if you wish. Google plans to make these new fuel-saving routes available on Android and iOS in the U S later this year and around the world at an unspecified time in the future.

Fuel-saving routes are not the end of Maps updates: Google also plans to issue alerts that will tell you when navigating underground power plants, which do not allow other vehicles with certain levels of exclusion. Google says these warnings will launch in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and the UK on Android and i O S in June. Many countries will receive warnings soon, according to Google.
Google is also developing new weather and air quality map layers set out in the coming months on Android and i O S. Google plans to launch a global climate platform and launch the air quality first in Australia, India and the US. The tech giant is also planning to launch a food photography tool this summer at selected locations in Portland, Oregon for Kroger’s Fred Meyer restaurant. The tool lets you share your location with E T A and store via Google Maps so your grocer order can be ready upon arrival.
