New research findings, reveal changes to your fingernails can show if you had Coronavirus.
The usual symptoms of C O V I D-19 are fever, a cough, fatigue and a loss of your sense of taste and smell.
But studies shows there is another part of the body where the virus appears to have an impact: the fingernails. Following a COVID-19 infection, for certain patients the fingernails appear discoloured or deformed a number of weeks later, which is termed as “C O V I D nails”.
The new symptom shows a red half-moon pattern that forms a convex band over the white area at the base of fingernails.
Red half-moon nail patterns like this are generally rare. Also, previously these similar patterns haven’t been seen so close to the nail base. If you notice such patterns then it could exclusively be an indication of a COVID-19 infection.
The reasons underlying this half-moon patterning remains unclear. It could be due to blood vessel damage associated with the virus itself. Otherwise, it may be due to the poor immune response against the virus that causes mini blood clots and discolouration.
The reports say, patients should not worry about these marks as they are otherwise asymptomatic. These marks persisted for one week to four weeks in the cases reported.
Some patients also noticed new horizontal indentations in the bases of the nails of their fingers and toes, which are known as Beau’s lines. These symptoms likely appear four weeks or more after a C O V I D -19 infection.
Besides the above C O V I D-related nail complaints, the available evidence suggests that there’s no association between the severity of C O V I D-19 infection and the type or extent of nail changes.
As a fact, even with the Beau’s lines and red half-moon pattern, there still lies ahead a long route to confirm a definite link between these nail changes and C O V I D – 19. Further, we will need many more cases to report before we can affirm there is a link.
After all, we should regard these as potential indicators of a past infection – and not final proof.
