Aldabra giant tortoise, weighing around 60 kg, has gone missing from The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust in Tamil Nadu.
A case under section 379 of IPC (Punishment for theft) was filed by the Madras Crocodile Bank. Mamallapuram police filed a case a day after the tortoise went missing. Special teams formed to investigate the case.
One of the largest tortoises in the world, Aldabra giant tortoise, weighs around 60 kg. It can cost upto Rs 15 lakh. These are one of the longest living tortoises.
The staff of the Madras Crocodile Bank suspect that the Aldabra giant tortoise might have been stolen. That might have happend in November from its enclosure that has no CCTV installed in the area.
Currently, there are three Aldabra giant tortoises in the enclosure.
Officials said that they will be checking cameras in the region to trace the miscreants. They have also questioned the staffers of the Madras Crocodile Bank. Said, they have been checking their mobile phone records to see if there are any suspicious activities.
The Madras Crocodile bank will fix new cameras in the premises and take all measures to avoid any such incident.
