India selected to UN Economic and Social Council for 2022-24 term

The Economic and Social Council(E C O S O C), one of the six main bodies of the United Nations selected India to be its member, for the term 2022-2024.

The 54-member E C O S O C is considered as the heart of the U N system to take care of the three dimensions of sustainable development namely, economic, social and environmental.

It is the main platform for initiating debate and innovative thinking. Also, it helps in building harmony and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals.

In addition, it is also responsible for the follow-up to major U N conferences and summits.

Members

Ivory Coast, Eswatini, Mauritius, Tunisia and the United Republic of Tanzania from the African States were the other members elected. From the eastern European states, Croatia and the Czech Republic also were elected. Caribbean states, Belize, Chile and Peru were elected from the Latin American and Caribbean states.

In the E C O S O C by-election, Greece, New Zealand and Denmark were elected for a term of office from January to December 2022. Before, Israel was elected for a term of office beginning January 1, 2022 and until December 31, 2023.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, T S Tirumurti in a tweet expressed his gratitude to all officials as well as Member States of the UN for their vote of confidence in India for #E C O S O C.

Presently, India is serving the 2021-22 term as a non-permanent member of the powerful U N Security Council. It will assume the Presidency of the 15-nation U N organ in August.

About ECOSOC

E C O S O C was established in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations. Its 54 members are elected by the General Assembly for three-year terms. According to E C O S O C website, seats on the Council are allocated based on geographical representation. It is such that 14 allocated to African states and 6 to eastern European states. Further, 11 to Asian states, 10 to Latin American and Caribbean states. Also, 13 to western European and other states.
