Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the dismantling of decommissioned aircraft carrier INS Viraat after a petition was filed.
A Mumbai-based company had filed the plea against the dismantling. Additionally company hopes to convert India’s longest-serving warship into a maritime museum and multi-functional adventure centre.
INS Viraat was decommissioned by the Indian Navy four years ago. It was the Indian Navy’s second centaur-class aircraft carrier. Which was in service for three decades before it was decommissioned in March 2017.
Several proposals have been made in the past to preserve it as a museum. But talks in the past have failed to materialise.
Also it may be noted that the INS Viraat was inducted into the Indian Navy in the year 1987. The warship was purchased by Gujarat-based Shree Ram Group for a sum of Rs 38.54 crore at an auction conducted by the Metal Scrap Trade Corporation last year.
