A Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh that is named after former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpeyee located at 10000 feet above sea level is ready to be opened for traffic movement in India.

As learnt from reliable sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be inaugurating this Tunnel in this month.  This is an all-weather connectivity tunnel with all modern traffic controlling systems installed in it.  Every 600 meter, a surveillance camera is placed.  The maximum speed limit fixed as 80 kmph in the Tunnel.  Fire proof exit and an evacuation tunnel also is in place.

Having a stretch of 9.02 kilometres, the tunnel’s one end touches Manali and other at Lahaul & Sipti Valley.  BRO (Border Roads Organization) took almost 10 years to complete this tunnel of 10.50 meter width and 5.52 meter height at a cost of over INR 2,500 Crore.  For the first time, Rowa flyer technology – that allows engineers working at inverted positions is used to construct this Tunnel.

Benefit of the tunnel is a reduction of 46 kilo meter roadway while travelling to Manali and Leh.

The idea of the tunnel was initiated by Indira Gandhi Government in 1983 and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government put foundation stone in 2002 and work started in the year 2009 and completed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government time.

It is indeed a landmark project of India Government and a prestigious project of BRO.
