On Thursday, 14th October 2020 India made a notification of Air Conditioner Import Ban. Through which, it had banned all imports of Air-condition sets with refrigerants in a move to help Indian products.
The Banned product range that includes Split A/c and Window A/c Categories were under ‘Free to Import’ category till date.
As approved by Minister of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) had released the notification on Thursday.
The new ruling will mainly affect China, who is the biggest exporter of Air Conditioner to India by Value and Quantity. Thailand also will be affected considerably. Together from these two countries, India makes 97 per cent of its Air Conditioner imports.
Total Value of these imports will amount to USD 155 million approximately per year.
Air Conditioner Import ban is not new in this category. Earlier in July, the Government had banned import of Television sets in order to help domestic production and industries. The move was to promote internal production of India under newly inducted ‘Aathmanirbhar’ programme. This made importers to approach government for special permit to import such goods during the period.
